FORTNITE FNCS Brand Revamp

BrANDING DEVELOPMENT

Client: Fortnite
Collaboration with We are Royale

When even your kids are losing their minds about a project you’re working on, you know it’ll be fun.

Video games.  We have had a love affair with them since the early days of Atari and Nintendo, we’re dating ourselves but hey, that’s cool, we’re kinda old.  Today’s gamer has infinite options quite literally at their fingertips and one of the most popular games on the face of the planet is Fortnite, without question.  When we got a call from the fine folks at Royale asking us to take part in the rebranding of Fortnite’s Champion Series, we jumped at the opportunity.

HOW THE WORK CAME TOGETHER

The champion among champions.  The “god-level” Fortnite players seek to earn the coveted FNCS champion series title.  Not only does it come with insane bragging rights but you also get awesome in-game items like a pick-axe that is emblazoned with the crest we helped to create.

A team of several designers came together and brainstormed ideas and then we (Jason Carne / Atomsmasher) were chosen to refine the final concept to completion. We cannot take full credit for all of the work, there were some amazingly talented creatives involved. All motion/animation and on-screen graphics were handled by other designers both internal and freelance. We can only lay claim to the logo itself, which is pretty spectacular if you ask our completely unbiased opinion.

“Our friends at We Are Royal contracted us to redesign the logo for FNCS (Fortnite Champion Series) for Epic Games. FNCS is a special tournament where elite players compete for serious cash in the professional Esports arena - this year alone over $10,000,000 is up for grabs. Epic Games wanted us to keep the general spirit the previous logo held, but to update it in a way where it felt more like an extension of the Fortnite branding itself. The primary challenge we faced was striking the right tone - they didn’t want this logo to come across as overly serious or too childish, it needed just the right balance of prestige and playfulness. We went through a wide array of explorations over the course of a month and eventually landed on something that fused an updated version of the original framing devices with fresh, bold typography. Though we enjoyed coming up with off-the-wall ideas and taking this brief in sometimes strange and unexpected directions (as seen in some rough pencil sketches here), we think that the decision to keep some of the existing brand equity was the right call. Both in-house and freelance animators, 3-D artists, and motion designers at W.A.R. all brought the logo to life in a variety of ways that made our work look great whether it was flat, chromed out, or made of digital glass.”
